Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) - Health & Energy Consequences

The HVAC&R Engineers will gain knowledge of Indoor Air Quality, its effect on productivity and the methods to improve Indoor Air Quality to highest level.

The course will contain :

  • Understanding the concept of indoor environment & Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Introduction to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) & Hazards:
  1. Role of HVAC&R Engineer wrt Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
  2. Health hazard because of poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
  3. Pollutants contributing to poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
  • Information related to occupational hazard in indoor environment.
  • Solution to poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

Industrial Environments

  • Various pollutants
  • Gaseous contaminants
  • Health effects of VOC

Management of Indoor Air Quality

  • Legal Aspects
  • ASHRAE & others International Standards of Ventilation for acceptable IAQ

Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCC) –

Engineers will learn & apply the LCC tool to :

  • Choose the most cost effective component, equipment, system or project from a range of available alternatives.
  • Understand & use the ‘TOOL’ to “BUY RIGHT rather than BUYING CHEAP”
  • Make important Economic decisions, so that one can stop doing some things the old way, and start doing new things the SMARTER FINANCIAL WAYS.

What is LCC?

  • Life cycle costs are the total cost or expenses from inception to disposal (“cradle to grave”) of a particular component, equipment , system or project incurred in its design, development, production, operation, maintenance ,support and final disposition over its anticipated useful life span.
  • The focus is on costs over a time frame - not simply on the lowest capital cost or lowest future energy costs.

Why do LCC Analysis in HVAC&R ?

  • The operating & maintenance costs may be 2 to 20 times the initial acquisition costs.
  • An equipment /system with very low initial cost may not be the cheapest in the long term .
  • A very high energy efficient equipment/system also may not be the cheapest when overall costs are accounted for.
  • Equipments/systems with different service lives.
  • A tool to relate costs with time e.g. levelized annual costs

Applied Psychrometrics

HVAC&R Engineers will gain in understanding of psychrometics & apply to design improved modern HVAC system design for Intelligent and smart buildings.

The course will focus on the art and science of Psychrometrics to enable the engineer to understand

  • Psychrometric terms and equations
  • Terms & concepts which are essential in designing HVAC&R systems.
  • Properties of Air & Moisture
  • Airconditioning Process
  • Sensible Heat Factors
  • Cooling & Dehumidification
  • Cooling with Humidification
  • By Pass Factor
  • Spray Characteristics
  • Heating & Humidification with Spray
  • Critical Loading Condition

Solved examples and case studies are integrated in to the course.
